Experiments described in this paper demonstrate that insoluble humic acid prepared by purification of peat is able to reduce the mobile metavanadate (VO 3 ) - anion. The anion is reduced to vanadyl (VO) 2+ cation which can be firmly fixed by the cation exchange properties of humic acid, with a geochemical enrichment factor of at least 50,000:1. These laboratory observations present ample explanation for the known geochemical association of V with fossil plant debris and bioliths. It can be assumed that these phenomena play a major role in the geochemical enrichment of V in organic substances.
