Saline formation waters from reservoirs in Oligocene deltaic clastic sedimentary rocks (Frio Formation), south Texas, are derived from three sources. Mixtures characterize most samples, accounting for the wide range in chemistry. Low salinity water is derived from Cenozoic shales. In contrast, saline water having variable Br/Cl ratios is allochthonous, and is derived from at least two sources in Mesozoic strata which underly the Cenozoic units. Saline water in this area, regardless of Br/Cl ratio, contains variable, high concentrations of Ca. Calcium is derived primarily from dissolution of plagioclase, as demonstrated by petrography, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr analyses, and chemical modelling. The McCl 2 or Carpenter function of saline formation waters in this area thus can be derived from water-rock interaction, and cannot be used to identify the ultimate source of solutes. Reverse osmosis is an unimportant processes in this area, and 18 O and D values converge on rock-buffered values of approximately +8%o and -30%o, respectively.
