Stratospheric Contaminants, Cosmic Dust Program

Scientific paper

A statistical analysis of catalogued samples of cosmic dust and different stratospheric contaminants was made on the basis of the first twelve volumes of the Cosmic Dust Catalog, published in the NASA Johnson Space Center since 1981. All particles catalogued during 10 years to date amount to 1663 samples. Their analysis shows that the percentage of the dust of true cosmic origin is roughly 30 %. The percentage of various kinds of contamination (natural, artificial, etc.) is specified, moreover with respect to the shape of each examined particle. Some astronomical aspects and perspectives of the research in this field in Czechoslovakia are also discussed.
