The principal facilities and capabilities of plasma wind tunnels PWK1 and PWK2, which are currently used to investigate the chemical behavior of thermal protection systems during the planet entry of spacecraft, are described. Both tunnels are equipped with magnetoplasmadynamic generators and are suitable for the qualification of heat-shield materials for space transportation systems, particularly with respect to the erosion mechanism. The tunnels are especially designed for the simulation of the first phase of reentry, where the specific enthalpy and heat flux are high while stagnation pressures are low. The importance of these facilities for the development of advanced heat-shield materials, such as C-C and C-SiC ceramics, is demonstrated.
