Reflectance measurements with a Thematic Mapper (TM)-compatible instrument on artificial plots of pure gypsum, quartz and carbonate in a South-Tunisian desert showed that these materials can be satisfactorily separated using TM bands 5 and 7. Gypsum types differing in grain size and habit show different reflectance characteristics. Gypsum contents of natural eolian dune surfaces can be determined from satellite data provided dune areas have been delineated previously by physiographic interpretation.
