After many discussions with colleagues, I realized that I was presenting facts and concepts in a disjointed way. Now I teach the inner solar system to nonscience majors by using a system of overarching concepts instead of talking about Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars one after the other. Hopefully, these concepts will transfer directly to the newly discovered extra-solar planetary systems.
