Various attempts at a unified representation of the Voigt functions K(x,y) and L(x,y) are reviewed in a systematic manner. Explicit representations of these functions are derived in terms of relatively more familiar special functions of one or two variables. Each of these representations will naturally yield other potentially useful properties of the Voigt functions. Some erroneous recent contributions to the theory of Voigt functions are reexamined and corrected.
