We draw upon recent results from efforts to directly and accurately measure the fundamental physical properties of young, low-mass stars and brown dwarfs that provide insights on the interiors of these objects. Specifically, there is emerging evidence for suppressed convection in young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, and that this suppression is connected to magnetic activity.
