The paper considers Guth's (1980) inflationary model, which proposes that a universe controlled by grand unified theories might be forced to undergo a period of so-called inflation: exceedingly rapid expansion, far faster than anything predicted in the standard models of the big bang. Explanations are offered for the apparent absence of magnetic monopoles in the universe and why and how natural galaxies began to form. Reasons for the set off of the big bang, and for the emergence from empty space of all matter, energy and entropy in the universe are suggested. How a universe of extraordinary uniformity and flatness might have emerged from primeval chaos is considered along with the 'large scale' structure of the universe.
