The gauges in which the well-known gravitational quadrupole radiation-reaction force have been frequently derived are criticized, a new gauge is described, and a new form of the reaction force is given. It is shown that the coordinates used for the criticized gauges can be improved by removing the formally divergent expressions found in these gauges. In the process, the form of the reaction force is altered. A new expression for the reaction force is presented which yields famous expressions for the time-averaged energy and angular momentum losses.
