The method of diagonalizing the instantaneous Hamiltonian is used to obtain the density of created particles and nonzero vacuum stress-energy tensor due to particle creation and vacuum polarization for vector mesons in the Friedman model of space-time. The finite mass of the vector mesons is obtained through the Higgs mechanism. The density of created particles appears to be finite, and the infinities in the stress-energy tensor can be subtracted by the standard renormalization procedure. It is concluded that these results support the idea that the finite mass of vector mesons interacting with the gravitational field must arise through the Higgs mechanism.
