An analysis of the Soviet Proton/Type-D launch vehicle is presented, including descriptions of several versions which are reported to have flown since 1965. Rocket stage dimensions are suggested, based on photographs taken of the upper part of the Salyut 1 launch vehicle and the E-stage, and possible details regarding the thrust and specific impulse of the Proton Vehicle's rocket engines are outlined. Launch vehicle masses are estimated for each mission using data from either published Soviet reports, or from calculations of the mission's energy requirements. Theories regarding future Soviet development of the Proton Vehicle are proposed, such as a Heavy Salyut, with a mass of about 25 tons, and missions to Mercury and Jupiter.
