We derive the nontrivial nature of the quantum field vacuum state in the de Sitter phase of an inflationary universe by explicity calculating the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor of a free massless scalar field. This yields an independent verification of the occurrence of Hawking radiation.
