Donatelli et al. (1982) have reported observations of total electron content (TEC) between Ascension Island and the Sirio satellite. TEC measurements provide the total electron content up to approximately 2000 km, but the greatest contribution to the column content comes from the F region ionosphere between 200- and 600-km altitude. Observing the time-dependent behavior in TEC gives a good indication of the diurnal variation in NMAX(F2), the peak density of the F2 layer. The present investigation is concerned with two aspects of the diurnal variation in TEC, including the late afternoon decrease between 1400 and 1800 LT, and the postsunset enhancement between 1900 and 2200 LT. The total electron content values are theoretically calculated as a function of local time. The obtained values are compared with observed TEC data above Ascension Island. It is found that an afternoon increase in the poleward wind speed is needed to bring about the afternoon decrease in TEC and to modulate the large postsunset TEC enhancement.
