The nonaxisymmetric filamentary structure in sunspots is discussed. Analytic solutions are presented for both zeroth and first-order equations of magnetostatic equilibrium. In regions with stronger magnetic fields, both gas pressure and temperature are shown to decrease. Density may increase or decrease, depending on the actual nonaxisymmetric structure of the sunspot magnetic field. Increasing density and decreasing temperature both cause a decrease in brightness, while decreasing density and increasing temperature have the opposite effect. Under the present model, decreasing temperature always predominates over decreasing density. It is concluded that dark penumbral filaments are associated with strong magnetic fields.
