It is noted that certain well known formulae of thermodynamics are no longer valid when systems whose entropies are not extensive (that is, not homogeneous of degree one) are under consideration. Attention is drawn to the fact that the accepted form for the entropy of a black hole falls into this category and so great care must be exercised when using black holes to generate added interest in undergraduate thermodynamics courses.
