The big mysteries of cosmic ray physics appear at high energies, where no longer the primary particles can be registered but extensive air showers that are produced by the primary in the atmosphere. The reconstruction of the primary energy and mass from air shower properties requires a comparison with detailed simulations of the shower development. A central part of the simulations is the treatment of hadronic and electromagnetic interactions of photons, electrons, hadrons, and nuclei with the nuclei of the air at energies from several MeV up to 1020eV. In this report a review of the most commonly used air shower simulation and hadronic interaction models is presented. The theoretical bases of different models are discussed and their predictions are compared using simulations with the CORSIKA program. The effects of model uncertainties on air shower observables and on physical results deduced from it are discussed.
