I have long experimented with rotating tubes containing layers of granular materials and non-granular materials (see the March 2000 Physics Today for an article on unexplained effects on granular materials in various rotated containers) . I attribute the major patterns obtained in granular and non-granular materials in rotating tubes to standing W-waves. Standing W-waves seem to be everywhere probably produced originally mostly by large radiators like the sun. >From the solution to a wave equation I show that the sun's planets were spaced by standing waves from the sun. In turn the Sun's waves drive many smaller resonators of the solar system producing higher frequencies and shorter wavelengths. Higher frequencies, for example, provide for the spacings of the satellites of the large gaseous planets. The apparent 1/f nature involved may be one of the best proofs of the wave's existence. Planetary rings seem to arise from waves produced by the internal structure of the planets involved. Continuing standing waves provide for the long term stability of the rings etc. See the Wagner web site at http://www.chatlink.com/ oedphd.
