Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are strong sources of high energy photons, from X rays through gamma rays. Radiation associated directly with accretion extends out to hard X rays in a few Seyfert galaxies, but overwhelmingly the brightest sources of hard X rays and gamma rays are jets in radio-loud AGN. These jets are highly collimated relativistic outflows formed near the central black hole, filled with energetic electrons that radiate via the synchrotron and inverse Compton processes. Most of this energy is generated in the inner, spatially unresolved jet (generally well below milli-arcsecond scales), so we must use multiwavelength variability to infer the jet structure. Recently X rays have also been seen, with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, from resolved jets on much larger scales, as much as a million light years from the black hole. These can be produced by electrons inverse-Compton scattering cosmic microwave background photons, but only if the jet still has bulk relativistic outflow on Megaparsec scales.
