Stability And Fragmentation Of Clusters, Scattering Of Atoms And Molecules

Scientific paper

A finite system dissipates an excess of internal energy by fragmentation or evaporation of part of its constituents. We have studied experimentally the evaporation of small atomic cluster ions Lin+, n=5-41, by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. We observed the dissociation pathways and measured the evaporation ratio and kinetic energy release for clusters produced in well controlled conditions. We used statistical models, and deduced from measurements the cluster dissociation energies, internal energies, kinetic energy release distributions and temperatures. .
