We present statistical fits for the auroral oval boundaries during the substorm sequence. The fits describe some substorm phase-dependent changes in the boundary locations, which have not been taken into account in the models presented earlier. We have located both the diffuse and discrete oval boundary crossings using particle precipitation data from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program satellites and categorized the locations according to the substorm phase and the level of magnetic activity determined from the AE index. Our analysis and data set are especially favorable for studying the oval boundary locations during growth and recovery phases. During expansion phase the dynamic poleward boundary of the oval is very difficult to model statistically, and in addition, the critical postmidnight data points (making the auroral bulge more visible) were missing from our data set. In our results the phase-dependent changes are largest during the recovery phase, and they strengthen with increasing magnetic activity (up to about 5°). In the morning sector during the recovery phase the ovals are clearly wider than in the evening and midnight sectors and during other substorm phases. This effect cannot be seen in the traditional oval models because they have not been designed for use during the recovery phase when magnetic activity is low but the morning sector of the oval is still very wide.
