Based on our understanding of the properties of the inner pc-scale jets of radio galaxies and blazars, mechanisms for the transfer of energy and momentum to kpc-scale jets are summarized. A neutral beam model, where ultra-relativistic photons and neutrons transfer energy to extended scales, can account for extended linear jet structure and the formation of knots and hot spots. This model will be confirmed if high-energy neutrinos are detected from blazars. A critical appraisal of Compton and synchrotron interpretations for the X-ray emission observed from kpc-scale jets with the Chandra X-ray Observatory is presented, including model fits to observations.
