The interpretation of solar and stellar coronal spectra requires reliable ionization balance calculations for the gas emitting the observed radiation. Ionization balance calculations require vast amounts of recombination and ionization data which are not readily obtainable from analytic expressions or simple calculations. Rather, these data typically require state-of-the-art atomic physics calculations, with the inclusion of weaker effects (spin-orbit and configuration interactions, relaxation, Auger broadening, etc.), to achieve the level of accuracy needed for use by astrophysicists. This talk will review the recombination data commonly used for coronal studies and discuss our recently undertaken project to produce reliable theoretical recombination data for K and L-shell ions of all elements up to and including Zn.
