We propose to investigate the relationship between white-light and X-ray emission in stellar flares using soft X-ray observations from RGS and EPIC and optical observations from the OM B-filter. On the Sun, white-light and hard X-ray flare emission are strongly correlated. A good correlation also exists between white-light emission and peak coronal pressure, as derived from the soft X-ray spectrum, in solar flares. We propose to look for a similar correlation in stellar flares, which would indicate that similar flare energy release and transport processes are occurring in both cases. XMM-Newton offers a unique and novel opportunity to simultaneously observe in the optical and in X-rays, deriving densities and temperatures from high resolution spectral diagnostics.
