The earliest stages of the Sun's life were fundamentally important for the formation of planetary seeds, physical and chemical processes in the Solar Nebula, the dissipation of left-over molecular material, the formation, distribution, and binding of water (e.g., in Oort-cloud comets, in the giant planets, or on Earth and Mars), and the chemistry of the forming planetary atmospheres. The principal goal of the present proposal is a study of the pre-main sequence high-energy life of our Sun by investigating a sample of stars of approximately one solar mass with known ages in the nearby Chamaeleon I star formation region. The large effective area of the XMM-Newton EPIC cameras allows us to conduct a spectroscopic X-ray study of the PMS X-ray Sun in Time.
