Scientific paper

We propose a mosaic of medium-deep XMM pointings to homogeneously cover a large (2 deg**2) and contiguous area of the COSMOS/VIMOS field. This field is (1) part of a breakthrough spectroscopic survey carried out using the French-Italian VIMOS consortium's 70 nights of guaranteed VLT time, to provide redshifts for all the objects with I_AB<24, and (2) target of the Cosmos HST/ACS treasury program, carried out using 640 HST orbits, to understand the interplay between Large Scale Structure, evolution and the formation of galaxies, Dark Matter - Energy and AGN. The main scientific objectives are the study of the formation and evolution of supermassive black holes, the cosmic evolution of their spatial distribution and the correlation with galaxy morphology and evolution.
