We propose to use XMM + EPIC to determine what powers three Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies with monster'-ous far-infrared luminosities (log F(FIR) 12.3 -- 12.6 L(solar)) and moderately high redshifts. All objects are classified as starburst galaxies on the basis of optical spectroscopy and their radio emission. If our XMM observations confirm their starburst nature then they would be among the the most distant and most luminous starburst ULIRGs detected with X--ray telescopes, at redshifts approaching the epoch of increased star formation and merging activity found from faint optical and radio surveys.
