We propose to carry out a large (550 ks) XMM-Newton monitoring program of Sgr A^*, the radiative manifestation of the putative massive black hole at the galactic center, to study in detail the broad band spectrum and timing properties of the source during its X-ray flaring activity. The program will be performed in coordination with INTEGRAL gamma-ray observations of the galactic center and with observations at lower frequencies. Although the galactic nucleus hosts the nearest and probably best studied massive black hole its physical and radiative properties and in particular its low level of high energy emission are still little understood.
