Observations of luminous, high-redshift quasars in the submillimetre band suggest that a high fraction of these AGN coexist alongside powerful, dust-enshrouded star formation in their host galaxies. They thus bear all the hallmarks of youthful galaxies, inhabiting an environment rich in gas and dust. We propose to obtain sensitive XMM--Newton spectroscopy of high-redshift, submm-luminous quasars from our intensive, multiwavelength study. This will establish whether there is any correlation between anomalous X-ray spectra (e.g. intrinsic absorption) and the presence of starbursts and/or large masses of molecular gas. This has significant implications for our understanding of the relation between the formation of AGN and their massive host galaxies.
