We intend to observe SN 1987A and its surroundings with the FOC using the near-UV objective prism. The main purpose of the observations is to carry out a more detailed study of the wavelength dependence of the apparent angular size and shape of the resolved supernova envelope, and thereby gain further information on the emission and absorption processes at work in the ejecta. The data will also be useful for determining the emission processes responsible for the UV flux recently detected from the SN 1987A circumstellar ring.
