We propose to observe the UV spectrum of SCO-X1 with theGHRS on HST. This will provide a probe into the structure anddynamics of the accretion flow, enable us to test models ofthe UV emission, and explore the circumstellar environment andevolution. We will observe with the GHRS G140L at high datarate with time resolution of 50 ms in order to test for shorttimescale variability in the UV lines and continuum. A highfrequency cutoff in the power spectrum of the variability inthe UV lines will provide a measure of the size of the UVemitting region. We will also observe at medium and highspectral resolution in the vicinity of the strong linesLAlpha, C IV Lambda1550 and N V Lambda1240 in order to bettermeasure the interstellar column density toward SCO-X1 and totest for evidence of X-ray ionization and winds. The UVspectral region is necessary for studying the effects of X-rayionization; optical emission lines and continuum are much lesssensitive to ionization effects. Neither the high time-resolution nor the high spectral resolution observations arefeasible with IUE.
