BATSE's gamma ray burst observations have accentuated the 25 year old mystery of this phenomenon. The observed radial and spatial burst distributions disagree with pre-BATSE theories that the sources are local neutron stars, and instead appear to favor a cosmological origin. The BATSE observations are being searched for revelatory burst properties such as absorption lines, repeating sources, cosmological signatures, and burst classes.
