Dark Matter, Globular Clusters In External Galaxies, Elliptical Galaxies, Masses And Mass Distribution
Scientific paper
Extragalactic globular cluster systems are valuable probes of the mass distribution and formation history of their host galaxies. Bright elliptical galaxies have globular cluster systems which are rich and spatially extended, making their globular clusters useful kinematical tracers of the mass distribution out to radii of ~100 kpc. Moreover, globular clusters can be used to probe the metallicity and metallicity gradient at large radii where studies in integrated light are difficult. Both the velocity and the metallicity can be determined from the spectrum of a globular cluster. Obtaining spectra of large numbers of extragalactic globular clusters is now feasible because of efficient multi-object spectrographs on large telescopes.
