GRB spectra offer clues to their emission mechanism, but only indirectly. Rather, one must take a specific model prediction and compare it with some aspect of the observed spectra, such as a particular value for each spectral index or their difference across the spectral break. I review evidence both for and against the synchrotron shock model, using BATSE spectroscopy catalog data.
