Big-bang nucleosynthesis is used to put a constraint on the number of Goldstone bosons from the breaking of a global symmetry. The toroidally symmetric Hopf texture in O(3) σ-models is studied. The texture is easy to visualize and is observed in nematic liquid crystals. The basic properties of texture can be understood without going through the numerical simulations. By using one of the most important scaling properties of global defects - the mass is scaled linearly with its size - some interesting results on the gravitational radiation and the induced two point galaxy and cluster correlation function are obtained.
