Hourly ionosonde data from six subauroral stations positioned in a geographic longitude range 4-284 deg E are used to analyze the auroral storm-related enhancements in the virtual height of the F-region (Delta-h-prime F). It is found that the auroral disturbances, as represented by the enhancements in the hourly auroral electrojet index AE, are largely limited between 10:00 and 20:00 UT, with a broad peak in AE between 13:00 and 19:00 UT. Simultaneously, the associated ionospheric height enhancements of Delta-h-prime F were on averge most pronounced at the stations whose local nighttime coincided with the universal occurrence time of auroral substorms. Thus, the large-scale ionospheric disturbances were most pronounced in the Australian-Asian longitudinal sector, but declined westward towards the European and American sectors. The average magnitude of the storm-induced Delta-h-prime F in the Australian-Asian region exhibited seasonal variations.
