We present a quantisation scheme for quantum field theories in general curved spacetimes, based on the continuous-time histories programme. Let us first examine the canonical treatment for a free, minimally coupled scalar field in a globally hyperbolic spacetime (M, g). One chooses a spacelike foliation writing M = ∑ × R and at an instant of time one seeks a representation of the canonical commutation relations (CCR) [/set hat φ (x), hat π (x')] = iδ (x,x') (1) Except for the static case one cannot select a unique representation, by seeking an operator version of the instantaneous Hamiltonian. Such an operator does not exist, because the corresponding representations of the CCR at different moments of time are unitarily inequivalent. This leads to a number of problems, most important among them the lack of a real-time description of quantum field theory in curved spacetime...
