Boundary actions for three-dimensional quantum gravity in the continuum and in the discretized formalism of Ponzano-Regge1 are studied with a view towards understanding possible boundary degrees of freedom. These should be related to the degrees of freedom postulated in the holography hypothesis2 and as such are supposed to encode all information about the space-time evolution. They have been argued to be a general characteristic of any theory of quantum gravity. We discuss the possible realization of these ideas in the context of a theory of discretized quantum gravity...
