A 2D transport model of the stratosphere following the El Chichon aerosol cloud is set forth in which particular treatment is given to the cloud's effects on ozone. Attention is given to a perturbation in the radiation field through which radiative effects on photodissociation rates and stratospheric temperatures are introduced. The model is based on that used for simulations by Pitari et al. (1987), and ozone and volcanic aerosol distributions are calculated on line with the chemistry of other chemical compounds in the model. Aerosol extinction for the end of January 1983 is illustrated and shown to agree with measurements, and total ozone percentage change is given as a function of latitude and time based on the perturbations induced by El Chichon aerosols in the radiation field. It is shown that ozone depletion following a large volcanic eruption is caused by heterogeneous chemistry, although radiative effects caused by sulfate aerosols are significant in the tropics and the midlatitudes.
