The ion model by Daly (1990) is extended by considering the effects of solar-wind conditions measured by the Giotto spacecraft and incorporating them into the path of integration. Since calculated ion fluxes depend to some extent on the path of integration, the path is employed as the guiding center of the locally created ion. The model refinements are applied to the pick-up ion fluxes for the water group and include: (1) the use of in situ measured magnetic fields and solar-wind data; and (2) O contributions from dissociations of the cometary CO and CO2. The data regarding magnetic field and solar wind allow the determination of the direction of integration for the ion-flux calculation. The structure of the calculated ion fluxes found by means of this method is shown to reflect that of the measured ion fluxes, suggesting that the data structure reflects changing solar-wind conditions.
