The Martian magnetosphere is studied by means of Mars-2, -3, and -5 measurements of the magnetic field and plasma with comparisons to similar Phobos-2 data. The Phobos-2 results indicate that an interplanetary magnetic field has a strong effect on the magnetic field inside the aeromagnetic tail. Attention is given to the induction effects that could characterize the interactions of the solar wind with Mars. A value of 10 exp 21 G cu cm is given as the upper limit for the Martian dipole moment, and remnant magnetization of the Martian mantle is theorized to be the cause of the weak magnetization. The formation of the Martian magnetosphere is analogous to the magnetospheres of Venus and of comets, and the Martian ionosphere and atmosphere are the primary obstacles for the solar wind.
