Classical radial diffusion alone cannot explain the composition, intensity and anisotropy of energetic ions and electrons observed in planetary magnetospheres. This paper reviews proposed nonadiabatic acceleration mechanisms and discuss if they can fill the gap between predictions of the radial diffusion model and the observations. The nonadiabatic acceleration models discussed here include the particle motions in the current sheet, wave-particle interactions, field-aligned electric field, recirculation, and magnetic pumping.
