We consider some general theorems regarding the possibility of tuning the tree level cosmological constant to zero in N = 1 supergravity. To sidestep problems with metastable vacua we define the cosmological constant as the absolute minimum of the scalar potential. In particular we show that setting the cosmological constant zero while simultaneously breaking supergravity requires the use of either gauge singlet elementary fields or a nonanalytic superpotential.
