The authors report high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of the Bα and Bγ lines of H I performed before, during and after the recent eclipse of ɛ Aur. In both lines, emission components are detected that are not eclipsed by the secondary. The absorption- and emission-line velocities and the emission-line strengths and widths are determined. The Bα emission has an integrated flux of 9×10-15W m-2, a FWHM of 60 km s-1, and a radial velocity that follows more closely the predicted velocity curve of the primary star than that of the secondary. However, the emission cannot be definitely identified with either component. The mean Bα/Bγ flux ratio was approximately unity on the three dates both lines were observed, indicating optically thick emission. The authors conclude that the emission originates in a flow rather than from material in Keplerian revolution; the Brackett-line emission probably has the same source as the previously observed Hα emission.
