It has recently been suggested that many of the "head" echoes 6rom meteor trails can be explained on the basis that the ionized columns behave as rough reflectors. This explanation is a result of confusion in terminology as to what constitutes a "head" echo. The characteristics of the echo type which is called a head echo by research workers at Ottawa are clarified and examples are given to distinguish this type of echo from others which resemble it.
