The heavy-quark expansion in QCD has become a widely used tool in heavy-quark physics. The theoretical aspects of the 0034-4885/60/10/003/img1 expansion (0034-4885/60/10/003/img2 being the mass of the heavy quark) and some techniques that appear in practical calculations are reviewed. Some applications to processes involving heavy quark decays are discussed.
