An assumption of diffusive equilibrium with variable scale height gives good global agreement with satellite Alouette observations of the topside F2-layer. The theory also gives information on the vertical variation of the scale height, and may be applied to topside data in reduced form, as given by Kinget al. (1964a). A recent criticism of the theory by Duncan (1964) is discussed.
