The New Horizons spacecraft will fly past Jupiter on February 28th 2007, obtaining close-up observations of Io's volcanoes, surface, and the Jovian magnetosphere which is filled with Io-derived plasma. We propose to provide a context for the New Horizons (NH) observations of Io by 1-4 micron AO imaging of Io's volcanoes during, and after the encounter (+ 2 week). Specifically, we will broaden the time base of New Horizons coverage to help determine which volcanoes seen by New Horizons are long-lived or short lived. We will look for and characterize any large eruptions that might inject plasma into the magnetosphere during NH observations of the Io torus and magnetosphere, and will extend the New Horizons infrared wavelength coverage from 2.5 to 4.0 microns for better constraints on the nature of the eruptions.
