A detailed theoretical analysis of artificial magnetic pulsations in the Pc frequency range, caused by modulated HF heating of the ionosphere, is presented. The generation of three-dimensional polarization currents due to periodic heating is investigated. The numerical results, obtained for different geophysical conditions and frequencies in the range 0.005 < f < 0.5 Hz, show a considerable influence of a sporadic E layer on the magnetic field amplitudes. Due to the increase of the integrated Hall conductivity caused by the layer, the magnetic variations on the ground become several times stronger. Longitudinal (geomagnetic field-aligned) polarization currents lead to a noticeable reduction of the magnetic amplitudes on the ground and, at the same time, determine the magnetic effect in the upper ionosphere.
