High-resolution data of the solar vector magnetogram can be used to examine the ways by which magnetic fields in the solar atmosphere are built up and relax. In a relaxed state, the α parameter should have approached a constant value over an extended region, therefore yielding a sharply peaked distribution of |α|. The authors present, for the first time, the discovery of power-law distributions for the |α| parameter. This finding suggests the existence of nontrivial build-up and relaxation mechanisms for the magnetic energy in the solar atmosphere.
